Global footwear production fell by 1.5 billion pairs! China reduced by 398 million pairs

According to new data released by the World Footwear Yearbook 2024, global footwear production slowed significantly last year.

The report, compiled and published annually by the Portuguese footwear association APICCAPS, shows that global footwear production fell by 1.5 billion pairs, or 6%, to 22.4 billion pairs in 2023 - the lowest in a decade if the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021 are not included.

Overall, the report noted that the decline in production was due to lower consumption in major markets. This includes a reduction of 749 million pairs in the United States, 398 million pairs in China and 399 million pairs in the European Union.

In addition, the report added that the number of sports shoes exported globally in 2023 was 14 billion pairs, down 9.1% from the previous year. Sneaker exports also fell 6.1 per cent last year to $168 million.

The footwear industry remains highly concentrated in Asia, with almost nine out of every 10 pairs of shoes produced in the world, accounting for 87.1 percent of global production, the report said. In contrast, Europe's share fell slightly, to 12.8 percent.

Together, the three countries account for more than three-quarters of global footwear exports, the report said.

Luis Onofre, president of APICCAPS, said in a statement:

"Although 2023 will be particularly tough for the international footwear industry, signs of nearshore outsourcing are already emerging. This obviously bodes well for our companies, which continue to invest and look for new business opportunities even in a very difficult environment."

According to APICCAPS, general data for each country are drawn from publicly available sources, namely the International Monetary Fund's World Economic Outlook Database, the World Bank's World Database and the CIA's World Factbook. Other sources include Eurostat, the European Commission, the Portuguese Government, AICEP Portugal Global, DGAE (Portugal's DirectorGeneral for Economic Activity), IAPMEI (Portugal's Institute for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Innovation) and Programa Compete.

The Confindustria Moda research center, the national association representing Italian footwear manufacturers, said the new data comes after the Italian footwear industry experienced a sharp slowdown in the first quarter of 2024.

In the first quarter of this year, sales in the country's footwear industry fell 10.1 percent compared to the same period in 2023. The total value of footwear exports fell by 9.7%, and exports for the quarter even fell by 10.3%.

China is the world's largest shoe producer, producing 12.3 billion pairs of shoes in 2023, accounting for nearly 55% of the global market share. India's share has increased and now accounts for 11.6% of the global total, according to the report.

In 2023, Asia will account for more than half (54.7%) of global consumption, an increase from the previous year. It was followed by Europe and North America with 13.9% and 13.4%, respectively.

The same is true for exports, with China accounting for 63.8% of total footwear exports in 2023, up 61.3% from 2022. Vietnam came in second with a 9.5 percent share, followed by Indonesia with 3.2 percent.
